With over 30 years of experience as a therapist, teacher and consultant in all aspects of substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders, helping individuals of all ages to recover from the catastrophic effects of addiction and mental illness has been my great privilege and passion. It’s important to remember that addiction and mental illness not only affect the individual but can also devastate those who love them. Therefore, my approach to treatment considers how family and loved ones can overcome fear and anger to become important participants in the healing process.
Using cognitive behavioral, motivational, classical, and postmodern recovery approaches and trauma-based interventions and realizing that each person seeking treatment is unique in their own way, my treatment philosophy sees alcohol and drug use as a symptom of the problem. In most cases, the real problem is that the addicted individual is simply not happy with life as they see it. They have little to no coping skills for stress, social anxiety, low self-esteem, and the symptoms of mental illness. Naturally, they turn to turn to alcohol and drugs for momentary relief, and with little insight into the long-term consequences.
The goal of treatment, as I see it, is to assist individuals in forming more realistic views of themselves and the world around them, teach more effective coping skills for stress and anxiety, build self-esteem and, most importantly, to give them hope.
