I am passionate about helping couples establish and/or regain closeness in their relationships. I have the experience (over 20 years) and training to guide couples in improving their relationships. As a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist (EFT), I have a step by step road map and can provide “a safe haven” to explore the issues and topics that bring couples into therapy such as jealousy, sex, affairs, parenting or money. Conflict-whether it is distance or arguments -creates a negative interaction cycle that is exhausting and defeating. This is usually a form of protest from one or both partners about not feeling connected, not trusting, or not feeling safe or secure with the other partner. When those we are attached to are not available, or are not responding to our needs to feel close or supported, we feel distressed. We may become angry, fearful, numb or checked out.

In a relatively short time, couples begin to recognize and eventually express their needs for love, support, protection and comfort that are often hidden or disguised by the harsh, angry words or silence and withholding. I can help each of you learn to communicate more effectively and be able to send clearer messages about your needs as well as be better able to hear your partner’s perspective and assist them to get their needs met. You will improve your ability to collaborate, problem-solve, have more fun, and compromise – in short – you’ll be more of a team – which is the secret of a long-lived, successful relationship!

In this model of therapy, partners begin to open up, and “Listen with the heart,” one of the cornerstones of EFT- which means listening not for the literal meaning of a partner’s words, but for the feelings that lie beneath. In return, the other partner is better able to respond from their heart in kind. This powerful approach is the emotional focus that creates positive change in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.

I am a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage & Family Therapy, the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors, The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy, as well as having extensive training in trauma, attachment theory and EMDR.
